We test integrated pest management (IPM) methods on nine cooperation farms of the project PesticideLife. The farms are located in Southern Nylands (3), Jokioinen region (3) and Southern Ostrobothnia (3).
The IPM practices were reviewed at the opening seminar on February. The best practices were chosen with farmers, researchers and stakeholders in concert. Testing of IPM practices is done on 2-3 parcels on each farm. The farmers has chosen three most suitable IPM practices of the alternatives after the seminar.
The alternatives were:
a) Crop rotation
b) Soil management
c) Variety choice
d) Well-balanced fertilization
e) Notes on pest monitoring and control effectiveness
f) Control threshold values
g) Pest identification
h) Disease forecasting
i) Follow-up of pest and control effectiveness using non-sprayed windows
Weeds, insects and diseases are monitored on every parcel by the project staff. Chemical pest management will be the last choice and only according to threshols values.
Field visits are organised on every summer. Visitor guides has been published to the farms. VG includes basic cultivation information of the parcel and the selected IPM practices. Visitor guides and notice boards of the project are erected close to the fields and published on the web.
Visitor guides 2012:
Visitor guides and notice board have been erected near the fields and are thus in Finnish and Swedish. One example of a visitor guide is displayed in English: Visitor guides exemplified FI SE ENFarms in Jokioinen region (in Finnish)
